Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s absence from Monday’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in his Kitui backyard has stirred political debate and drawn criticism from across the aisle.
The national event, held at Ithookwe Stadium and presided over by President William Ruto, attracted thousands of residents and dignitaries.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei led the criticism, calling Kalonzo’s decision “unpatriotic.”
“Kalonzo skipping the Mashujaa Day national celebrations was unpatriotic to the country, yet all Ukambani were attending in mammoth crowds,” he said, praising Kitui residents for their warm welcome to President Ruto.
While absent from the ceremony, Kalonzo marked the day with a statement honoring the late Raila Odinga, describing him as “the embodiment of Kenya’s enduring spirit of resilience and sacrifice.”

In his message, Kalonzo wrote, “Your sacrifices, Baba, will not be forgotten. You are and will always remain my hero, Kenya’s Shujaa.”
This year’s Mashujaa Day, traditionally a celebration of Kenya’s freedom fighters and national icons, was overshadowed by mourning for Raila, whose death has cast a somber mood across the nation.
Kalonzo praised his longtime ally as “a man who defied adversity at every turn,” recalling their decades-long partnership in the struggle for democracy and reform.
His absence, however, has reignited questions about his political calculus and engagement at national functions, especially in moments that spotlight both patriotism and regional pride.
