Kalonzo the 6th: Will He Break The ‘Eternal Deputy’s Curse

Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has been threatening to rule Kenya since 2002. Without success.

He was on the Presidential ballot in 2007. But for optics, and possibly under the influence of then President Kibaki’s Mount Kenya mafia.

Historians say that a deal was cut between the GEMA mafia and the Kalonzo Musyoka team led by Mutula Kilonzo Senior and tycoon Jonstone Muthama.

Details of the deal are scanty. But suffice it to say, the speed at which Kalonzo and Mutula Kilonzo joined Kibaki in 2008 is in itself suspicious.

It will be recalled Kalonzo was appointed Vice President when Kenya was literally on fire, to give the Kibaki team a semblance of legitimacy.

Raila hardliners then accused Kalonzo of dancing on PEV corpses.

On this, Kalonzo has been vindicated by Raila’s handshake in 2018 and broad-based politics in 2025.

Kalonzo’s detractors accuse him of yielding ground to Raila too easily. He supported Raila in 2013, 2017, and 2022. Raila has had no intentions of supporting him.

They accuse him of being used by Raila as a human shield to force handshakes, only for the benefits to be channeled to Nyanza and Western Kenya.

Tarmacked roads are few in Ukambani compared to Kisii, Luo Nyanza, and Western.

Ukambani is getting lethargic with Kalonzo over selfishness claims. He played hard to get with Uhuru and now Ruto, forcing them to work with other communities.

Kalonzo’s hometown in Tseikuru has no tarmac access despite his leadership since 1985.

Critics say he has failed to demand Ukambani’s share of Raila’s handshake largesse, with naysayers suggesting that he pockets his personal share.

There are claims that, unlike Raila who nurtures raw talent and top-notch professionals, Kalonzo relishes sycophants who then hold him at ransom.
