Kalonzo Welcomes Gachagua to Opposition Amid Coalition Speculations

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has finally addressed speculation about a potential alliance with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a burial ceremony in Embu on Thursday, Kalonzo, accompanied by other Azimio leaders including DAP Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, welcomed the idea of Gachagua joining the opposition coalition.

In his remarks, Kalonzo expressed confidence in the ongoing success of the Azimio coalition, emphasizing that the opposition’s functions would continue uninterrupted, regardless of recent government appointments.

He made it clear that the coalition would remain steadfast in its mission, saying, “Either in government or in opposition, as we almost begin January, we want to tell those who joined the government to go alone, but the coalition would continue to operate. We must have a new coalition.”

Kalonzo’s statement follows comments from Gachagua himself, who earlier in the week expressed openness to aligning with the Azimio coalition.

During a burial service in Makueni County on Wednesday, December 18, Gachagua invited the Kamba community to join forces with other communities for future political endeavors. He also took a subtle jab at President William Ruto’s administration while praising Kalonzo for standing firm against the Kenya Kwanza government.

“We heard that the former DP said that he was ready to join hands with Kalonzo and Wamalwa. Do you agree that Gachagua should join us?” Wamalwa asked the audience, echoing Kalonzo’s sentiments of welcoming Gachagua to the opposition.

Gachagua remarked, “Wiper people led by Kalonzo have shown grace and we have decided you are our friends for life. And we don’t just say that. When we say it, we mean it. We owe Kalonzo and you people. We are in talks with Kalonzo and we will strategize well. We are looking for a way to improve the economy and end the culture of lies.”

Gachagua also highlighted the political power of the Kamba community, noting that they have the numbers to challenge President Ruto’s administration in the next elections, provided they turn out in large numbers.

This statement underscores the significance of the Kamba vote in shaping Kenya’s political landscape, especially as parties position themselves for the 2027 election cycle.

As the political atmosphere in Kenya heats up, the possibility of a coalition between Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua has the potential to reshape the opposition landscape.

While talks are still ongoing, the prospect of uniting forces against the Kenya Kwanza government is likely to dominate discussions as the next general elections approach.
