Kalonzo’s Courting Ritual: Behind the Kamba-Luo Dowry Exchange

A record Kamba traditional dowry was paid to the Dholuo community by Kamba elders on behalf of their political son, Kalonzo Musyoka.

The dowry, whose first tranche consisted of 100 healthy cows and bulls, was offered to the community through the great Jaramogi Oginga Odinga family — Africa’s biggest political brand.

To the clueless observers, Kalonzo and his kinsmen and women, drawn from all Ukambani clans, appeared to be attending an event to mourn Raila Amolo Odinga.

But to seasoned political watchers, the move was a symbolic act of political bonding and subtle supplication.

Few Kenyans remember Ezekiel Mweu, a former Kitui East MP and a rebel politician who was neutralised by President Moi for his leftist leanings.

So what is at stake?
Kalonzo fought fiercely with Raila between 2006 to August 2012 over the President Kibaki succession.

Both Raila and Kalonzo had hoped that with William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta indicted over the 2008 PEV, they were the automatic choice..

Their myopic interpretation of Chapter 6 of the 2010 constitution led to the false belief that the duo were disqualified…

They fought to catch Kibaki’s eye… but he looked elsewhere… (or duped) Musalia Mudavadi before finally settling for Uhuruto.

Then it dawned on Jakom and Kalonzo…that they had been duped to sustain Kibaki second term..

The only option? Tie up the 2013, 2017 and 2022 partnership.. unsuccessfully.

With Baba safely in heaven, and Kalonzo oozing, feeling or pretending to be Joshua, the option was to outshine those who had visited Oponda firm with two, three four cows…and some sheep…and he did it.

As usual, Kalonzo goofed. He attempted to rename Ithookwe stadium in honour of Raila Odinga. A suggestion that backfired in his face…

Not only did Kitui people reject the move, but MCA’s threatened to it down should it find it in the floor of the County Assembly
