KalonzoTo Azimio MPs: Reject Proposed Finance Bill 2024

Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on Members of Parliament affiliated with the Azimio opposition coalition to reject the proposed Finance Bill 2024, arguing that the legislation would inflict further harm on ordinary Kenyans.

During Azimio’s Parliamentary Group meeting on Tuesday, Kalonzo expressed his concerns that the bill’s harsh tax proposals on essential items would severely impact the populace.

He warned that the Kenya Kwanza administration, much like with the Finance Bill 2023, would disregard public opposition and implement the bill unchanged.

“We took to the streets before, and as a coalition, we are prepared to do so again if necessary. I hope you are ready to assertively engage in public participation,” Kalonzo stated.

He urged the opposition to be steadfast in defending Kenyans’ interests as President Ruto plans to raise taxes to 22% by the end of his term.

Additionally, Kalonzo criticized the government over the fake fertilizer scandal, insisting that Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi should be held accountable.

He praised Azimio members on the special 11-member committee for their resolute stance.

“This issue won’t be forgotten. We’ll see the consequences when there’s a harvest shortfall. Kenyans lack confidence in the committee’s findings,” he remarked.

The National Treasury’s 2024 Finance Bill proposes increased taxes on goods such as bread and vehicles and grants the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) access to personal data to enhance tax collection.

These proposals have already sparked opposition from both the public and opposition leaders.
