Kanyadhiang’ Bridge Temporarily Closed for Urgent Repairs

Written by Lisa Murimi

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), in collaboration with Homa Bay County Government, has announced the temporary closure of the Kanyadhiang’ Bridge in Kendu Bay, effective Saturday, June 14, to allow for urgent repairs to the approach slab.

In a joint statement, KeNHA and Governor Gladys Wanga assured the public that the bridge’s main structure remains safe and stable.

”We wish to inform the public about the temporary closure of Kanyadhiang’ Bridge in Kendu Bay to allow for urgent repairs on the approach slab,” the joint statement read in part.

”We would like to assure all road users that while repair works are being carried out on the approach slab, the bridge’s main structure remains completely safe and stable,” the statement continued.

KeNHA has deployed repair teams to expedite the works and minimise disruption.

While the bridge is closed, motorists travelling to and from Kendu Bay are advised to use an alternative route via Goshen Hotel, Oluch Intake Bridge, Nyangajo Primary School, and Obama Road. This diversion spans approximately five kilometres.

To maintain order and safety, traffic marshals and police officers have been stationed along the detour to guide motorists.

”We request all road users to drive carefully and follow instructions from traffic police and marshals stationed at the diversion points,” the authorities advised.

The closure comes amid concerns over structural strain caused by increased traffic and recent heavy rainfall.

While no definitive reopening date has been provided, KeNHA anticipates a swift return to normal traffic once repairs are completed.

The public is urged to remain patient as the necessary works are carried out to ensure long-term safety and reliability of the bridge.
