Kariokor Residents Threaten Protests Over Garbage and Sewer Crisis

Traders and residents of Kariokor in Nairobi are raising alarms over health risks posed by burst sewers and uncollected garbage along Race Course Road.

Led by Kariokor Mechanics Association Chairperson John Obala, they have threatened to stage protests if Governor Johnson Sakaja does not take immediate action to clean up the area and repair the sewer system.

When *The Eastleigh Voice* visited the area, the streets were littered with garbage and raw sewage, making it difficult for motorists to navigate.

Residents and traders expressed frustration, with some accusing county workers of illegally dumping trash in the area.

“The pollution has been a long-standing issue, yet the county government has done nothing,” Obala said.

The foul smell from the burst sewers is driving customers away from nearby businesses, according to local traders.

Mary Muthoni, a vendor at Mwariro Market, said, “The sewer leak has been here for years. It gets worse during the rainy season, with floods of sewage everywhere.”

Residents also fear for the safety of children playing near the unsanitary areas, as they face exposure to harmful health risks.

They are calling on the county to fix the sewer system and clean up the streets to avoid further disruptions.
