Martha Karua, the leader of Narc Kenya, has urged Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir to cooperate with the government but not blindly.
During the swearing-in ceremony in Mombasa, she said Nassir should work with President William Ruto’s government but from a position of strength.
“I want to say to Governor Abdulswamad, collaborate with the government that has taken power. But collaborate from a position of strength, not kneeling down,” Karua stated.
Additionally, Karua reiterated the need to stick together and protect the plight of Mombasa constituents.
“They will do all they can to take Mombasa, I encourage you to stay together and stay behind those you elected,” she stated.
“It is not necessary that you have to run those who have taken power to deliver for your people,” Karua added.
Karua, in particular, urged the new governor to demand greater stakes in Mombasa County’s gains from the port and other coastal resources.
“If those whose counties have oil are given a stake, this port is your oil. Mombasa should have a stake in whatever profit is made in the port.”
Karua stated that she will be ready to call out the government whenever the need arises in her role in the opposition.
“This is not the end of the road. We might be on vacation but the in serving the public you cannot go on permanent vacation. Whenever we will be required to speak on issues, our voice will be heard,” affirmed Karua.
She also stated that she is considering seeking additional redress through the East Africa Court of Justice.
Karua was among the top Azimio leaders present at Nassir’s inauguration as Mombasa governor on Thursday.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoke, former Mombasa governor Hassan Joho and his deputy William Kingi, senators Mohammed Faki (Mombasa), Ledama Ole Kina (Narok), Nairobi Women Rep Esther Passaris, Mohammed Zamzam (Mombasa), and ex-MP Fatuma Gedi of Wajir are among the other leaders present.
Sabina Chege (Jomvu), Mishi Mboko (Likoni), Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni), Mohamed Soud Machele (Mvita), Badi Twalib (Jomvu), Omar Mwinyi (Changamwe), and Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Harub Khatri were also in attendance.
