IEBC Clears Karungo Wa Thang’wa for Kiambu Race

In accordance with the High Court order, on Tuesday the Commission cleared Thang'wa, who will run on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket .

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has finally cleared Kiambu Senatorial candidate Karungo wa Thang’wa’s candidacy for the August elections.

In accordance with the High Court order, on Tuesday the Commission cleared Thang’wa, who will run on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

On July 7, 2022, the High Court dismissed the Commission Dispute Resolution Committee’s decision to bar Thang’wa from running in the Kiambu Senatorial race.

“We received a court order, and I am confident the Returning Officer complied with it,” said Wafula Chebukati.

Thang’wa took to his Twitter to express his delight at the decision.

“IEBC has just cleared us to run. Thank you so much for your prayers and support. Mola Asante. Now tell a friend to tell a friend that we will be on the ballot in the elections on August 9, 2022,” he said.

The IEBC tribunal noted in its ruling that Thang’wa was unfit to contest after being removed from his position as Kiambu County Executive Committee Member for Youth Affairs in October 2019.

The Committee found Thangwa’s impeachment to be valid and determined that it had not been successfully challenged in court.

However, the High Court ruled that there was no evidence of graft that led to Thangwa’s removal from office.

Thang’wa, who intends to succeed incumbent Senator Kimani Wamatangi, will now compete against the other six candidates who were cleared by the Commission.
