Kasarani Stadium Capacity Slashed to 27,000 As CAF Responds to Security Violations

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed strict new measures on Kasarani Stadium following a string of serious security lapses during Kenya’s recent home matches.

In a strongly worded directive to the Football Kenya Federation, CAF cited repeated failures to control ticketless spectators, breaches of the stadium perimeter, violent incidents and inadequate emergency response.

The governing body noted that despite multiple warnings and earlier sanctions, organisers and authorities had failed to meet basic safety standards.

The most recent incidents included the overrunning of stadium gates by crowds without valid electronic tickets, breakdowns in crowd control at Ngomongo roundabout and chaotic access through multiple gates. Tear gas and flash grenades were reportedly used to disperse unruly crowds, triggering panic. There were also reports of live ammunition fired near fans and staff. Stones were thrown at security officers while vehicles moved unsafely within spectator zones.

CAF also criticised the lack of medical incident reports despite confirmed injuries, the poor police response to requests for intervention, and the absence of CCTV coverage at key entry points.

As punishment and to safeguard future matches, CAF has ordered that Kasarani’s capacity be capped at 60 per cent, limiting attendance to 27,000 people. Only fans with electronic tickets will be admitted, with thermal tickets banned outright. The Local Organising Committee and government must also run a public campaign to educate supporters on entry requirements and safety protocols.

CAF warned that failure to comply fully with these directives could result in more severe sanctions, including moving Kenya’s home fixtures to neutral venues.

The measures will apply to all upcoming Kenya home games at Kasarani, with CAF insisting they are necessary to protect spectators, preserve the integrity of the competition and restore confidence in Kenya’s ability to host international matches.
