Politician and Businessman, Philip Aroko, a key suspect in the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Were, has been released on a cash bail of Ksh.300,000 by the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts.
Principal Magistrate, Irene Gichobi, in her ruling, imposed strict bail conditions, including the surrender of Aroko’s passport and a ban on traveling to Homa Bay County, where the late MP hailed from. Aroko is also barred from contacting the victim’s family, co-suspects, or any individuals linked to the case.
The court further ordered him not to interfere with any evidence and to cooperate fully with investigators by regularly reporting to them and availing any required information.
The prosecution had opposed Aroko’s release, arguing that the case was of significant public interest and that he should remain in custody for seven more days to aid in ongoing investigations. They maintained that while Aroko had been cooperative, his continued detention was necessary to determine the extent of his involvement.
Aroko is one of 11 suspects being investigated in connection with the MP’s death. The case will be mentioned again on June 3, 2025.
