Katiba Institute Appoints Abdul Noormohamed as New Board Chair

Katiba Institute has announced the appointment of Abdul Noormohamed as the new chairperson of its Board of Directors.

In a statement on Friday, March 26, the Katiba Institute stated that Noormohamed will succeed Professor Jill Cottrell Ghai, who will continue to serve as a board member.

“Katiba Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Abdul Noormohamed as the new Chair of its Board of Directors,” read the statement in part.

Noormohamed is the Director of Civic Voice, an initiative dedicated to amplifying youth-led civic engagement, tech justice, and democratic renewal.

Previously, he served as Vice President for Africa at Luminate, where he led regional strategy on digital rights, civic participation, and public interest media.

Noormohamed has also served as the Executive Director of the Kenya Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ-Kenya) and held grant-making roles at the Open Society Foundations (Eastern Africa).

He was also the Head of Legal and Redress at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights early in his career.

The seasoned human rights advocate and policy strategist currently serves on the board of the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) and is a member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association’s Human Rights and Rule of Law Committee.

Noormohamed holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Public International Law from University College London, a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Nairobi, and is a Chevening Scholar.

“We are honoured to welcome Abdul to this role and look forward to his leadership as we strengthen our mission to champion societal transformation by promoting constitutionalism through research, public interest litigation, and civic engagement,” Katiba Institute stated.

The organization further expressed gratitude to Professor Ghai for her leadership as outgoing Board Chair.

“Thanks to Prof. Jill Cottrell Ghai for her guidance and contributions as outgoing Board Chair. We are pleased that Prof. Jill will continue to serve as a member of the Board, and we look forward to her continued insight and support,” Katiba Institute concluded.

Noormohamed’s appointment comes months after the Katiba Institute appointed Nora Mbagathi as the organization’s Executive Director.

In a statement, Katiba Institute said Nora will lead the organization’s efforts in developing a culture of constitutionalism in Kenya and the region.

“We are very pleased that Nora has taken up this leadership role. Her strong leadership skills, warm personality, and previous experience in strategic litigation at an international level will, with the strong support of the very able team at Katiba Institute, propel the Institution to greater heights,” Professor Ghai stated.

Katiba Institute was established in 2011 to promote knowledge and understanding of the 2010 Constitution while defending and facilitating its implementation.

Recently, Katiba Institute launched its third strategic plan to guide its work over the next five years, from 2025 to 2029.

The plan outlines five strategic result areas that will guide its work, focusing on accountability, the protection of rights and fundamental freedoms, enhancing public participation, promoting equality and inclusion, and advocating for policy and institutional reforms.
