The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has nominated 15 individuals for appointment as judges of the Court of Appeal, marking a key step in the process of strengthening the country’s appellate judiciary.

According to the nomination list released by the commission, the candidates include sitting High Court judges as well as advocates drawn from private practice, reflecting a mix of judicial experience and legal practice.

Those nominated from the bench include Lady Justice Hedwig Imbosa Ong’udi, Justice Mathews Nduma Nderi, Lady Justice Linnet Mumo Ndolo, Justice Enock Chacha Mwita, Lady Justice Lucy Mwihaki Njuguna, Justice Samson Odhiambo Okongo, Lady Justice Rachel Chepkoech Ngetich, Justice Stephen Andersen Radido Okiyo, Justice Munyao Sila and Justice Byram Ongaya.

The nominees from outside the High Court include Joseph Kipchumba Kigen Katwa, Brown Murungi Kairaria, Ahmed Issack Hassan, Paul Lilan and Johnson Okoth Okello.

The nominations were made pursuant to the JSC’s constitutional mandate to recruit, vet, and recommend judicial officers for appointment.

The shortlisted candidates are expected to undergo further evaluation, including public participation processes, before final recommendations are forwarded to the President for appointment in accordance with the Constitution.

The Court of Appeal plays a critical role in Kenya’s judicial system, hearing appeals from the High Court and specialised courts.

The current nominations come amid ongoing efforts to address workload pressures and enhance efficiency within the appellate court.

Further steps in the appointment process, including interviews and public vetting, will be announced by the Judicial Service Commission in due course.
