KCB RFC Target National Sevens Title as Circuit Heads to Embu

KCB RFC will be out to reclaim the Kenya National Sevens title they last won in 2023 when the fourth leg of the National Sevens Circuit kicks off in Embu this weekend.

The bankers have enjoyed a dominant run this season, leading the standings with 63 points, five ahead of second-placed Strathmore Leos, after three legs. Their latest triumph came at the Christie Sevens, where they edged rivals to tighten their grip at the top.

Strength and Conditioning coach Andrew Amonde, a former Kenya Sevens captain, expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness while stressing the importance of player rotation.

“We are happy that so far, we do not have any major niggles in the squad. Some players have not fully participated, so we might have a different team in the coming tournament to avoid fatigue and ensure full representation,” Amonde said.

Amonde highlighted the team’s consistency, noting they have reached all three finals so far. “Our focus is on maintaining performance and extending the gap at the top. Making the finals in every leg should remain the target,” he added.

KCB’s campaign has been boosted by standout winger Floyd Wabwire, who has racked up 115 points in three tournaments. Wabwire, named Player of the Final at the Christie Sevens, is the current top try scorer with 21 tries.

The bankers beat Strathmore Leos 15-14 to win the Driftwood Sevens, before falling 24-07 to the students in the Prinsloo Sevens final. Both teams were tied at 41 points after two legs, but KCB’s Christie Sevens victory gave them a five-point cushion.

Having lifted the National Sevens Trophy five times, in 2013, 2014, 2019, and 2023, KCB RFC are now firmly focused on securing a sixth crown this season.
