KDF Promotes Jepkosgei After London Marathon Performance

Joyciline Jepkosgei, who won silver in the 2022 London Marathon, has been promoted to Sergeant at Defence Headquarters.

General Robert Kibochi, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), promoted her on Tuesday.

Kibochi praised Jepkosgei for her efforts in representing the country in major races and for improving her timing, which has resulted in multiple world records being broken.

We are very grateful for your continuous hard work and for representing Kenya and KDF well.

“We wish you the best as competing at such high levels requires a lot of hard work and determination. I’m confident that you will continue doing better since you are still young,” Kibochi said.

Jepkosgei won silver in the London Marathon with a personal best time of 2:17:43.

She applauded how the KDF looks after athletes, particularly in terms of physiotherapy.

The event was witnessed by the Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General Peter Njiru, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics Major General Muthuri Kiugu, Colonel Physical Readiness and Sports Defence Headquarters Colonel Benjamin Kiprop, and Defence Forces Sergeant Major WOI Elijah Koranga.

Sergeant Jepkosgei made a significant breakthrough in 2019 when she won both the half marathon and marathon in New York City in times of 1:10:07 and 2:22:38.

Two years later, she won another gold medal at the 2021 London Marathon, improving on her previous time in New York by five minutes, clocking a time of 2:17:43.

Sergeant Jepkosgei represented Kenya at the Prague Half Marathon in 2017, becoming the first woman to break 65 minutes for the half marathon with her 64:52 world record 13.1-mile.

She won a bronze medal at the African Championships in Durban, South Africa, in 2016 and a silver medal at the World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia, Spain.
