KDF Rehearsal Brings Traffic To A Halt

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops brought traffic to a halt along the busy Uhuru Highway as they staged a mock military procession to Nyayo National Stadium, where the State Funeral Service for former President Mwai Kibaki will be held.

The troops marched from State House Road to the Kenyatta Avenue roundabout, then on to Nyayo Stadium.

The procession, which drew curious onlookers to line up along city roads, is a dress rehearsal for what will take place on Friday morning when soldiers transport former President Mwai Kibaki’s body to the State Funeral Service, where Head of State Uhuru Kenyatta will lead the country in commemorating his predecessor and political mentor.

The troops were dressed in their combat uniforms during the dry run, as opposed to their ceremonial garb associated with their respective military formations on Friday.

After Kibaki’s two predecessors, founding president Jomo Kenyatta in 1978 and Daniel Arap Moi in February 2020, the KDF has accorded full military and civilian honors to a national leader for the third time in the country’s history.

From securing the Lee Funeral Home, where the former President’s body is being preserved, to the Parliament Buildings, where he is lying in state, the military has played a key role in the funeral ceremonies since his death on Friday.

A gun carriage carrying the casket bearing Kibaki’s body is expected to depart from State House, Nairobi, for the Nyayo National Stadium, as it did during the State Funeral of Retired President, the Late Daniel arap Moi.
