Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has warned protesters planning to take to the streets on Tuesday to respect the law and avoid entering protected areas.
The warning comes as fears grow that Gen Z protesters may attempt to storm the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), a facility deemed a protected area.
Kanja emphasized that the Kenya Civil Aviation Act and the Protected Areas Act Cap 204 Laws of Kenya prohibit unauthorized entry into protected areas, including the LPG Plant, Bitumen Plant, and Petroleum depots at JKIA.
Section 58 of the Kenya Civil Aviation Act states that any person who trespasses on any land forming part of a government airfield or a licensed airfield commits an offence punishable by law.
Kanja urged protesters to respect these legal provisions and refrain from attempting to enter or interfere with protected areas.
“We urge all individuals participating in demonstrations to respect these legal provisions and refrain from attempting to enter or interfere with protected areas. The National Police Service is resolute in its commitment to uphold and enforce these laws,” Kanja warned.
The warning comes as President William Ruto has vowed not to tolerate further destruction of property in the guise of exercising democratic rights.
The Gen Z protesters, who have been demanding action on issues such as the Finance Bill and government inefficiency, have vowed to return to the streets despite the President’s decision to withdraw the Finance Bill and sack his entire Cabinet.
The Kenya Airports Authority has advised passengers scheduled for flights on Tuesday to arrive early at JKIA due to anticipated security checks.
