KeNHA Extends Closure of Mombasa–Nairobi Highway Section for Ongoing Works

By Michelle Ndaga

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced an extension of the temporary closure of a section of the Mombasa–Nairobi (A8) Highway to facilitate ongoing construction works.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, KeNHA said the closure will affect the stretch between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange from September 23 to October 4, 2025.

The move is aimed at enabling road construction and drainage improvements designed to ease traffic flow and enhance connectivity along the busy highway.

Motorists plying the route have been advised to use alternative roads and comply with traffic management measures put in place during the period.

KeNHA assured road users that the works are necessary to ensure the safety and durability of the transport corridor, which serves as a critical link between Mombasa Port and the rest of the country.

The authority also urged patience and cooperation from the public, noting that the improvements will significantly reduce congestion and improve mobility once completed.

The Mombasa–Nairobi Highway is one of Kenya’s most vital transport arteries, handling heavy commercial traffic as well as passenger vehicles daily. The ongoing works form part of broader infrastructure upgrades aimed at modernizing the coastal city’s road network.
