The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has invited prequalification bids from Chinese contractors for the expansion of the Pangani–Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road.
The major infrastructure project is being financed through China’s Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.
The initiative aims to upgrade the B32 corridor, from Muthaiga through Kiambu to Ndumberi, from the current two-lane single carriageway into a four-lane dual carriageway.
The improved road will feature service lanes, pedestrian walkways, and footbridges to enhance accessibility and safety.
In a notice published Tuesday, KeNHA confirmed that financing agreements with EXIM Bank will be finalized upon conclusion of the commercial contract.
As part of the deal, Chinese firms or consortia led by Chinese enterprises are exclusively invited to bid.
“This road project forms a key link within eastern Nairobi and is expected to significantly reduce congestion along Kiambu Road and the Thika Superhighway,” said KeNHA.
The project will include construction of new interchanges at Kamiti Road, Banana Road, and the Northern Bypass intersections. Six pedestrian footbridges are also planned.
Additionally, spur roads such as Ridgeways Road and Evergreen–UN Avenue through Runda will be improved to integrate with the new dual carriageway.
The total construction period is set for 36 months, with an additional 24-month defects notification period. Interested applicants must demonstrate a minimum annual construction turnover of USD 250 million over the past five years to qualify.
The deadline for prequalification submissions is August 22, 2025.
