KeNHA: Rampant Axle-Lifting Exposing Northern-Corridor To Costly Repairs

Kenya National Highways Authority has asked drivers to observe all traffic laws to evade steep overloading penalties.

Mariakani Weighbridge cluster manager Seth Ongwae said the authority will impose hefty fines on transporters who engage in overloading as well as illegal axle-lifting.

“We have impounded alot of trucks plying the northern corridor, which were found to have overloaded by illegally lifting their axles. We want to caution drivers that overloading is a traffic offence which attracts a hefty fine.”

Mr. Ongwae said KeNHA, through its contractor Ebenezer Commercial Works, has engaged with various stakeholders to address the vice.

KeNHA has partnered with organizations such as the Kenya Transporters Association and the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, to enhance compliance.

The minimum fines for excess axle load or gross vehicle weight are set in the Traffic Act, and they apply to truck owners who violate the weighbridge rules.

The fines are charged per extra tonne per axle, and they increase with the weight of the overload which could run into tens of millions.
