New ALEHU Team To Strengthen Axle Load Enforcement

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has reinforced its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s road infrastructure by welcoming a new team to the Axle Load Enforcement Highway Unit (ALEHU).

The team, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Ms. Nancy Jerobon, was officially received by KeNHA’s Nairobi Region Director, Eng. Dominic Kirira.

In his address, Eng. Kirira emphasized the critical role of axle load control in preserving road quality and ensuring safety.

He noted that effective management of axle loads not only reduces road maintenance costs but also extends the lifespan of the infrastructure and enhances overall road safety.

The ALEHU is tasked with enforcing regulations related to axle load limits on Kenyan highways. Their responsibilities include monitoring and inspecting vehicles to ensure compliance with legal weight restrictions, operating weighbridges, and conducting roadside checks.

By preventing overloading, the unit plays a pivotal role in maintaining the structural integrity of roads and ensuring the safety of all road users.

Kenya has made significant strides in axle load compliance in recent years. According to KeNHA, compliance rates on Kenyan highways have risen to a commendable 97%. This improvement is attributed to stringent enforcement measures and collaborative efforts between KeNHA and law enforcement agencies.

Ms. Jerobon reaffirmed the ALEHU team’s dedication to protecting KeNHA assets through effective collaboration. She highlighted the importance of teamwork and coordination in achieving the unit’s objectives and ensuring that the country’s road infrastructure remains in optimal condition.
