A Kenya Airways passenger has died while aboard a flight from New York, US to Nairobi.
In a statement seen by Uzalendo News, the passenger aged 66, was said to have been unresponsive in a suspected medical emergency. Reports indicate that the passenger developed breathing difficulties.
The incident forced the pilots to divert to the nearest airport in Casablanca, Morocco where he was examined and pronounced dead.
Kenya Airways passed its condolences to the families of the man.
What do you do when a passenger dies in flight?
If a passenger becomes ill on a plane, cabin crew are expected to provide emergency medical care to the person.
With planes already being confined locations, it can be difficult to conduct this discreetly, with medical attention such as CPR often performed in the aisle or galley.
If the person dies, the body is generally relocated to an empty row or business class, away from the other passengers, and covered by a rug.
Surprisingly, passengers cannot be declared deceased under the law.
While passengers can die “apparently in flight,” local authorities can only declare them formally dead after landing.
If you hear a passenger named ‘Jim Wilson’ on your trip, it’s most likely a dead body, with the secret code allowing them to fly undetected. HR also refers to a dead body on the aeroplane and is an abbreviation for ‘Human Remains.’
