Kenya Airways Appoints Captain George Kamal As Acting Boss

Kenya Airways has appointed Captain George Kamal as its acting group managing director and chief executive officer following the departure of Allan Kilavuka at the end of his tenure.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the national carrier’s board said Kilavuka would proceed on terminal leave ahead of the expiry of his contract, bringing to a close a six year period in charge of the airline.

The board thanked him for his leadership, describing his tenure as one marked by diligence and service during a difficult phase for the company.

Captain Kamal, who currently serves as chief operating officer, takes over the role with effect from December 16, 2025. The board said he will hold the position on an acting basis as it begins a competitive recruitment process to identify a substantive chief executive.

Kamal brings more than 29 years of aviation leadership experience across Africa and the Middle East. He has previously held senior positions including operations director at Air Arabia and chief operations and executive officer at Iraqi Airways. He holds a doctorate in business administration and a master’s degree in aviation management.

The board said it would work closely with Kamal during the transition period as Kenya Airways continues to implement its long running turnaround strategy. Key priorities include improving operational reliability, driving sustainable growth and advancing plans to secure a strategic investor with the support of shareholders.

Kilavuka’s exit comes at a time when the airline is seeking to consolidate recent operational gains while addressing persistent financial pressures.
