Kenya and the United Kingdom have renewed their strategic partnership, ushering in a fresh wave of bilateral cooperation focused on trade, investment, green growth, and regional security. The renewed pact follows a high-level meeting on Tuesday between President William Ruto and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street in London.
The new agreement succeeds the 2020–2025 framework and is expected to double trade volumes between the two countries over the next five years. President Ruto highlighted the economic potential of the partnership, noting its capacity to create wealth, generate employment, and deliver tangible benefits for both nations.
“This will create wealth and jobs, and deliver tangible economic impact,” Ruto stated.
The partnership will also expand funding for green growth initiatives and support digital innovation by accelerating investment in tech start-ups. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is among the sectors expected to see substantial growth under the renewed framework.
A flagship project under the agreement is the Nairobi Railway City Project, which aims to transform urban mobility and stimulate economic activity in the Nairobi Metropolitan area. President Ruto confirmed that the financing framework for the initiative is being finalised, with Kenya committing to provide counterpart funding.
Additionally, the renewed pact strengthens joint responses to regional and global security challenges. Ruto praised the ongoing Kenya–UK Defence Cooperation Agreement, citing its success and reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to its effective implementation.
The two leaders underscored the partnership’s foundation in mutual respect, shared values, and the goal of building a prosperous, secure, and sustainable future for both countries.
