Kenya Govt. To Close All Private Children’s Homes

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has announced plans to close all of the country’s children’s homes.

Florence Bore, Cabinet Secretary for Social Protection, made the announcement while meeting with staff and children at the Child Welfare Society of Kenya Temporary Place of Safety on Saturday.

The Secretary of State stated that this was part of the government’s Deinstitutionalisation of Children program.

According to the CS, some people were using the children’s homes to engage in human trafficking.

Children who have been homeless or rescued will be placed in foster homes identified by the government under the new program.

The government announced in November 2022 that it would phase out children’s homes and orphanages, placing children back in families and under community-based care
