Kenya Crime Rate Rises By 16.7pc

According to a new report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the total number of crimes reported to police in Kenya increased by 16.7% in the last year (KNBS). 

The total crime reported to law enforcement agencies increased from 69, 645 in 2020 to 81, 272 in 2021, according to the Economic Survey 2022 report released Thursday. 

The total number of people reported to the police for crimes involving dangerous drugs, criminal damage, economic crimes, corruption, and crimes involving police officers increased by 42.5 percent from 10,706 in 2020 to 15,255 in 2021, according to the report.

According to the Korea National Bureau of Statistics, the total number of people reported to have committed robbery, breaking and entering, and theft increased by 34.6 percent from 19,103 in 2020 to 25,721 in 2021, with stealing accounting for 47.3 percent of the total. 

The number of people reported for vehicle and other thefts, stock theft, breaking and entering, and theft by servant increased by 65.2, 31.2, 23.4, and 19.9%, respectively. 

During the same time period, robbery cases fell by 6.5 percent to 2,734. 

The number of people reported for crimes involving dangerous drugs, criminal damage, economic crimes, corruption, and police misconduct increased by 42.5 percent from 10,706 in 2020 to 15,255 in 2021, according to the report.
