In the Netherlands, a man who has been on the run for four years for running an international human smuggling ring has been apprehended.

Following a clandestine operation by DCI agents, John Habeta, a 53-year-old Dutch national of Eritrean heritage, was apprehended in Kenya.

Interpol had issued a red alert for his arrest, according to a statement from the DCI.

“The suspect was apprehended in Nairobi, where he had been hiding for an undisclosed duration in a well-coordinated operation between Dutch authorities and detectives located at the regional INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) fugitives and wanted person section.”

Habeta is suspected of being the leader of an international human smuggling ring that operates in the shadows and is responsible for people trafficking from Africa to Europe.

He is suspected of being involved in at least four separate operations in which Eritrean people were smuggled into Europe via Asia.

On orders from the Ministry of Interior, he was deported to the Netherlands shortly after his detention, as cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i pronounced his presence in the country to be detrimental to the country’s national interests.
