The Kasarani Indoor Arena roared to life today as the World Taekwondo Under-21 Championships wrapped up in a thrilling display of agility, power, and world-class talent.
After four days of intense clashes, lightning-fast kicks, and tactical brilliance, the global Taekwondo community – led by the World Taekwondo President Dr. Chungwon Choue – collectively broke into a carnival celebration of the final medal tally, bringing down the curtain on the inaugural, unforgettable showdown.
The Championships brought together the sport’s most promising young stars, each fighting with passion and precision for a place on the podium.
Team Kenya Performance
Kenya fielded four determined athletes on the final day of the competition, each stepping into the arena with grit and national pride. Despite strong, spirited performances, the Kenyan team fell to more experienced opponents:
● Women -62kg: Sophy Clay lost to Smychkova Valeryia of AIN.
● Men -87kg: Frank Odegi was defeated by Mehnana Nahil of France.
● Men -68kg: Elvis Juma succumbed to Krajisknik Zarko.
● Women -46kg: Katuku Bridgit lost to Fatima Bensaid of Morocco.
While Team Kenya did not secure medals in the championships, their participation has been hailed as an essential step in strengthening the country’s rising Taekwondo pedigree.
Reflecting on the team’s efforts, Kenya Taekwondo Federation Vice President, Philip Khaemba, expressed confidence in Kenya’s long-term prospects:
“Our athletes have fought bravely against some of the most seasoned young competitors globally. While the results were not in our favour, this Championship has clearly demonstrated the immense potential within Team Kenya. The exposure to international standards is invaluable, and we are confident that with sustained investment, development, and exposure, our athletes will soon begin to deliver podium finishes for the country.”
