Gladys Shollei, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, stated that investigations into the four dissenting Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners will continue regardless of resignations.
According to Shollei, the tribunal established by President William Ruto was tasked with providing insight into the conduct and suitability of the four commissioners.
She also stated that investigations will be carried out to ensure that Kenyans understand the truth behind the scuffle and confusion witnessed at the Bomas National Tallying Center during the August 2022 election, when the electoral commissioners were at odds.
According to the Deputy Speaker, the tribunal is mandated by Article 251 of the Constitution to investigate the matter, report on the facts, and make a binding recommendation to the President.
Justus Nyang’aya resigned, stating that he had reflected and determined that it was best to put the national interest first.
The other three are still in office: vice chairperson Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, and Irene Masit.
“I have always tried to act in the best interests of the country,” the letter stated in part.
The resignation came amid escalating hostility between the country’s two major political factions.
