Kenya Met Forecasts Above-Average Short Rains for October to December

The Kenya Meteorological Department has released its rainfall forecast for the upcoming October, November, and December season, predicting slightly above-average rainfall across various regions of the country.

The announcement comes as farmers and stakeholders prepare for the critical planting season that significantly impacts agricultural yields.

According to the department, the Western region is expected to record slightly above-average rainfall, while the Central region may experience near to below-average precipitation.

This forecast is based on advanced statistical analysis and dynamic modeling that identifies patterns reflecting similar climatic conditions in previous years.

“The 2024 rainfall is expected to be poorly distributed, both in time and space over several parts of the country,” the statement indicated. While the Western sector is likely to have a fair to good distribution, the Central sector may face a poor to fair distribution of rainfall. The remainder of the country is expected to experience even poorer distribution.

Specific regions set to receive rainfall include the Western region and North Rift Valley counties such as Kericho, West Pokot, Nandi, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nakuru, Laikipia, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Baringo, which will see rains from September until the end of December. Dry spells are also anticipated during this period.

In the Mt. Kenya region and Nairobi, rainfall is projected from the third week of October to early December, with potential breaks in precipitation throughout the season.

Meanwhile, counties in the northwestern region, including Turkana and Samburu, will continue to receive rains from September until late November or early December, albeit with prolonged dry spells.

Short rains across Coastal and Northeastern regions are forecast to begin from late October, with Taita Taveta and Kajiado counties seeing rainfall from early November through December.

In anticipation of changing weather patterns, the meteorological department assured the public of weekly weather updates and monthly forecasts as the rains progress.

Farmers and residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for fluctuating weather conditions during the upcoming season.
