The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory affecting 34 counties, warning of intensified downpours expected between Friday, October 3, and Sunday, October 5, 2025.
In its statement, the department noted that rainfall amounts are likely to exceed 20mm in 24 hours, particularly over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands west of the Rift Valley.
The rains are also expected to extend to the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, where gusty winds may accompany the downpours.
The rainfall being experienced over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the Highlands west of the Rift Valley is expected to intensify to more than 20mm in 24 hours and likely to spread to the Highlands east of the Rift Valley including Nairobi on Friday, October 3, 2025.
The heavy rainfall is expected to continue up to Sunday, October 5, 2025, and likely to be accompanied by gusty winds. It is projected to reduce in intensity from Monday, October 6, 2025,” read the advisory.
Additionally, the department warned of strong southerly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) over the eastern sector, cautioning that such conditions could disrupt outdoor activities, aviation, and marine operations.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain vigilant, as the heavy rains could trigger localized flooding, reduced visibility, and difficult driving conditions.
Communities in flood-prone regions and those near steep slopes have been urged to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety.
The advisory comes as Kenya continues to experience shifting weather patterns linked to climate change, underscoring the need for early preparedness and response mechanisms to minimize potential risks.
