UPDATE NEWS

National Assembly Sports Committee member Charles Nguna is sceptical of Kenya’s ability to re-open sports activities, four months after they were banned by the government over the coronavirus pandemic.

The Mwingi West MP says resumption of sports activities will require maximum discipline and draconian guidelines to ensure safety of players and also prevent infection rate rise. The legislator believes Kenya has done little for the anticipation of the reopening of the sector which is bound to lose close to Sh5 billion this year owing to the recess caused by the crisis.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed is yet to announce the way forward for the sporting activities, one month after receiving a return-to-action recommendations report from the advisory committee she formed in June.

“We’re not ready at all because nothing has been done to ensure safety when sports resume. It will be suicidal to return to action without proper guidelines of controlling large numbers of fans and also without structures like testing kits for our athletes.’’
