Kenya Pipeline Breaks Silence After Fire Incident Near its Storage Facilities

The Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) has announced that a fire that broke out near its headquarters on Thursday, September 25, was successfully contained.

In a statement, KPC said the fire erupted from a manhole at the entrance of a petrol station along Nanyuki Road.

“A fire incident reported near the Kenya Pipeline Company headquarters on Thursday, September 25th, has been contained.

“KPC was notified of the incident at 12:40 PM after fire erupted from a manhole at the entrance of a petrol station located along Nanyuki Road, Industrial Area,” read part of the statement.

The company noted that it deployed emergency response teams to contain the fire, given the scene’s proximity to its fuel storage facilities.

The response teams managed to contain the fire and charged the manhole drains with foam to prevent recurrence.

KPC disclosed that no injuries were reported during the incident and that all the staff were evacuated safely.

“All KPC staff were safely evacuated from the premises and advised to return home as the safety and emergency teams responded to the situation. No injuries were recorded, and KPC operations were not affected,” KPC stated.

The containment effort involved a coordinated response with Kenya Power, which disconnected the electricity supply to reduce further risk, alongside the County Government of Nairobi, Kenya Airports Authority, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

Makadara Deputy County Commissioner and the Sinai community leaders also helped in ensuring public safety.

Meanwhile, KPC has formed a multidisciplinary team to investigate the exact cause of the fire incident.

The incident comes days after over 50 families were rendered homeless after a fire razed an apartment building in the Njoguini area in Athi River.

The inferno, which broke out on September 18 at around 8:00 pm, resulted in the loss of property whose value is yet to be established.

The blaze was reportedly caused by a gas cylinder burst, with the flames quickly spreading from the initial house to neighboring structures.

The Machakos County fire team and police responded swiftly to contain the fire; however, by the time emergency services arrived, most houses had already been severely affected.

Police confirmed that no casualties were reported, as residents managed to evacuate safely before the fire spread to nearby buildings.
