Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i on Tuesday, April 26 gazetted Tuesday, May 3 as a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the CS for Interior in the exercise of the powers conferred b section 2 (1) of the Public holidays’ Act, declares that Tuesday, the 3rd May 2022, shall be a public holiday to mark Iid-ul-Fitr,” part of the gazette notice read.

Idd-ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, beginning and ending with the appearance of the crescent moon.

This year, the period began on April 1, 2022, and will end in the evening of May 1, 2022.

During Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, Muslim faithful wake up to perform a ritual known as ghusl, in which they cleanse their bodies.

After getting dressed for the day, they gather in mosques or open spaces for prayers, listen to a khutba (sermon), and pay zakat al-fitr (charity in the form of food).

Kenyans will sail through a Four-day holiday.

This is after Friday April 29, was declared a public holiday to mark the funeral of former President Mwai Kibaki.

On Sunday, the world commemorates Labour Day, which by default makes Monday a public holiday.
