Kenya has recorded a significant rise in illegal immigration, according to President William Ruto’s latest annual security report.
Between September 2023 and August 2024, authorities arrested 1,455 undocumented migrants, up from 1,219 the previous year.
The report attributes the influx to Kenya’s relative peace and stability, which make it an attractive destination and transit hub for migrants fleeing conflicts, famine, and instability in East and Central Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes region.
Ethiopians accounted for the majority of arrests, with 1,140 detained, followed by 139 Somalis, 84 Eritreans, and smaller numbers from nations including South Sudan, Congo, and Egypt.
The government expressed concerns over the security risks linked to illegal immigration, particularly human trafficking.
“The increase in undocumented immigrants creates avenues for human trafficking and exploitation,” the report warned.
To address these challenges, Kenya has intensified border security through advanced surveillance, technology, and stricter enforcement of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act of 2011.
In the same period, 1,541 undocumented immigrants were repatriated, and 116 deported.
The government is also reviewing immigration laws to tackle emerging threats and enhance cooperation with neighboring countries and international organizations.
“Strengthening border security is key to managing migration flows and safeguarding national security,” the report concluded.
