Somalia has approved the restart of miraa exports from Kenya.
The directive was made following a meeting in Nairobi between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The two heads of state also agreed on the resumption of Kenya Airways’ regular service to Mogadishu.
The two had previously spoken when President Mohamud was inaugurated in Mogadishu last month.
President Mohamud declared during his first trip to Kenya since assuming the presidency for a second time that he was prepared to “repair” relations with Kenya based on mutual respect and the ability to address shared challenges.
Earlier, a joint statement from the delegations of Kenya and Somalia stated that fish imports from Somalia and miraa exports from Kenya would resume “with immediate effect.”
“Agreed to facilitate, diversify, and promote trade and economic cooperation,” the two nations wrote, “and directed the immediate market access of fish and fish products from Somalia to Kenya and vice versa, as well as the resumption of trade in khat (miraa) from Kenya to Somalia.”
Kenya Airways flight schedules “will resume immediately based on existing bilateral air services agreement,” according to the dispatch (BASA).
The BASA will be examined by the appropriate authorities.
