Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u has announced that all payments for government services will be made through eCitizen.
He noted that this payment platform is integrated with all electronic payment platforms in Kenya, including mobile money.
The official short code number for the pay bill will be 222, while the USSD number will be 2222. Citizens will use their national identity card as their unique identifier, while foreigners will use their alien identity card. The official registration number will be the unique identifier for companies, institutions, and organizations.
“All payments for government services will be made progressively through the platform,” Prof Ndung’u stated.
This comes just weeks after President William Ruto promised to digitize and make available online all government services. Even as he promised 5,000, he noted that making government services available online would ease and improve service delivery.
“To ensure that Kenyans are getting better government services, we will ensure that 5,000 government services are accessible online in a period of six months. This will help to alleviate the problem of Kenyans waiting in long lines to be served,” said the President.
According to the Head of State, only 300 government services are currently available online.
ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo reiterated the president’s position on December 28 by saying that once the program is implemented, longlines in government offices across the country will be a thing of the past. He was speaking at the launch of free WiFi at Kisumu’s Ahero market.
“The government is keen to discourage people from traveling long distances to seek services, and the first step is to equip the entire country with internet services, which will be used as an anchor to offer government services,” said Mr. Owalo.
