Kenya To Aid Uganda, Tanzania In Plastic Ban Policy

Kenya has committed to promote Uganda and Tanzania in enforcing the plastic carrier bag ban to its full extent.

Mamo Mamo, Nema’s director general, said the agency has taken a number of steps to reduce the use of banned plastics both nationally and regionally.

The regional prohibition would be imposed, according to Mamo, with the cooperation of the Director General’s Forum from three East African countries.

“We’re resurrecting this forum so that we may talk about environmental issues.” This is because environmental issues cross borders,” Mamo explained, adding that the forum was dormant for a long time.

The DGs of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, according to Mamo, would lead these efforts in their respective nations.

Kenya’s tough stance on plastic pollution comes only weeks before the UN General Assembly’s fifth session resumes.

The meeting will take place in person and online from February 28 to March 2 at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

From March 3-4, UNEA-5 will be followed by a special session of the UN Environment Assembly to commemorate UNEP’s 50th anniversary.

The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) is the world’s highest-level gathering on environmental issues.
