Kenya to Honour National Heroes During Mashujaa Day Celebrations

Written by Lisa Murimi

Kenya will honour some of its most celebrated figures, both past and present, during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The National Heroes Council has nominated 130 individuals for recognition, highlighting their contributions to the nation’s history and progress.

Among those nominated are renowned freedom fighters Dedan Kimathi and Mekatilili wa Menza, who led resistance movements against British colonial rule.

Kimathi’s leadership in the Mau Mau resistance and Mekatilili’s defiance in protecting the Giriama people have left lasting legacies in Kenya’s struggle for independence.

The list also features modern heroes such as Motif Di Don, a prominent music producer, and Abbas Gullet, former Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross.

Their influence spans cultural, humanitarian, and artistic achievements, reflecting Kenya’s diverse talents.

Sanya Alpha Kennedy, Kenya’s highest blood donor, is recognized for his extraordinary contributions to saving lives through over 100 blood donations.

These honourees symbolise the virtues of patriotism, selflessness, and courage, and will be celebrated on October 20 during Mashujaa Day.

The Council has invited public input on the nominees, ensuring transparency in the selection process.
