Kenya to Inaugurate Embassy in Rabat as Mudavadi Embarks on Three-Day Visit to Morocco

Kenya is set to formally inaugurate its embassy in Rabat as Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi begins a three-day official visit to Morocco. The move marks a significant step in deepening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.

According to Jacob Ngetich, Director of Press Service at Mudavadi’s office, the embassy, which began operations in December 2023, is a testament to the growing partnership between Kenya and Morocco. The two nations established diplomatic relations in 1965 and have since expanded cooperation across various sectors.

“The PCS is set to inaugurate the Kenya Embassy in Rabat as part of efforts to reinforce the cordial ties between Kenya and Morocco,” Ngetich said.

During the visit, Mudavadi is expected to hold high-level talks with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. Among the key issues on the agenda are improving trade relations and addressing the trade imbalance that heavily favours Morocco. Currently, Kenya exports approximately Sh480 million worth of goods, including tea, coffee, textiles, fruits, and vegetables, while imports from Morocco, largely composed of fertilizers, oils, and aircraft parts, amount to Sh12.1 billion.

In addition to economic discussions, Mudavadi will engage with Moroccan ministers responsible for agriculture and trade in a bid to explore new areas of cooperation.

Several bilateral agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on housing and another between Kenya’s Foreign Service Academy and Morocco’s Diplomatic Academy.

This strategic diplomatic engagement underscores Kenya’s commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation and enhancing its presence in North Africa, while also opening new opportunities for trade, education, and development partnerships.
