The Kenyan government is set to operationalize a Regional Centre of Competence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Skilling at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), as part of a wider push to modernize public service delivery through emerging technologies.

ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui met with Public Service and Human Capital Development PS Dr. Jane Imbunya on Friday to finalise plans for activating the Centre. The initiative, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to enhance digital and AI capabilities across government institutions.

A joint statement released after the meeting described the Centre as a strategic hub for equipping public sector personnel with digital and AI skills, in line with efforts to improve citizen-centric service delivery and support Kenya’s digital transformation agenda.

The Centre is also expected to contribute to Kenya’s digital diplomacy by promoting innovation and fostering regional and international collaboration in emerging technologies.

The move follows the recent launch of Kenya’s National AI Strategy (2025–2030), which outlines a five-year roadmap to position the country as a leader in AI innovation on the continent.

The two principal secretaries emphasised the need for swift implementation to ensure the Centre delivers measurable outcomes, aligning with the government’s vision for a digitally empowered public service.
