Kenya To Support ATMIS’ Handover of Security Operations to Somali National Armed Forces in 2024

Alfred Mutua, the CS for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, met Ms. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, the head of the UNSOS.

The agenda for the conference included topics of shared interest pertaining to the development of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The ATMIS drawdown, which is the process of gradually reducing ATMIS personnel levels until the transfer of security operations to the Somali National Armed Forces in December 2024, was discussed.

With UNSOS’s help, ATMIS will keep drawing down, and Kenya will continue to support it, the CS promised.

As ATMIS is ready to transfer over, they also talked about the necessity of cooperating with Kenya and other Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to enhance their capabilities.

Ms. Kacyira reaffirmed UNSOS’s commitment to keep assisting ATMIS with logistics.

They also talked on Kenya’s ongoing assistance with training and other forms of support for ATMIS and Somali Security Services.

President William Ruto’s dedication to and support of the mobilisation of ATMIS resources were praised by Ms. Kacyira.
