Kenyan athletics is basking in glory as double world record holder Faith Kipyegon and emerging star Beatrice Chebet receive nominations for World Athletics’ prestigious Track Athlete of the Year awards.
This marks a significant recognition for both athletes following a record-breaking season.
Kipyegon, the reigning Olympic champion in the women’s 1500m, made history by securing the title for the third consecutive time, a feat no other female athlete has achieved. She also showcased her versatility by earning silver in the 5000m at the summer games and set a new world record of 3:49.04 during the Paris Diamond League. Adding to her accolades, Kipyegon clinched her fifth Diamond League trophy with a time of 3:54.75 in Brussels.
Chebet also had a stellar season, making headlines by winning Kenya’s first-ever Olympic gold in the women’s 10,000m. She followed up with another gold in the 5000m and set a world record for the 10,000m with a time of 28:54.14 at the Prefontaine Classic. Additionally, she successfully defended her World Cross Country title in March, further solidifying her status as one of the sport’s elite.
In the men’s category, Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi is nominated, having demonstrated remarkable skill and resilience throughout the season. Wanyonyi, the current world record holder for the mile, looks poised to chase David Rudisha’s long-standing record of 1:40.91.
As the voting closes on October 27, fans can support their athletes across social media platforms, showcasing Kenya’s rich athletic legacy on the global stage.
