The number of bank accounts with more than Sh100,000 increased by roughly 5% in the 12-month period ending December last year.

According to data from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the number of accounts climbed to 1.871 from 1.783 in the same period in 2021, signifying a 4.9 percent gain.

The rise came at a time when depositors were hoping for bigger returns on their funds.

Lenders with high-value deposits, on the other hand, numbered 1.847 million, compared to 24,257 for microfinance organizations.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) had the highest percentage of high-value deposits at 11%, followed by NCBA (10.1%) and Stanbic Bank (7.5%).
