Kenyan Cases rise, as state weighs economy against Covid-19

The Health Ministry has recorded 389 cases testing positive from 4,829 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

The statistics have raised the total number of positive cases in the country to 7,577.

Distribution of positive cases per Counties: Nairobi (248) Kajiado (36) Kiambu (27), Mombasa (23),
Busia (17), Machakos (10),
Migori, (9), Kitui, (6), Makueni, (3), Uasin Gishu, (3), Nakuru, (2), Kilifi, (2), Garissa, (1), Muranga, (1) and Narok, (1) case.

So far, the government has tested a total of 185,035 samples, out of the projected 250,000 cases by June 2020.

88 patients have recovered from various hospitals, raising Kenya’s negative cases to 2,236.

However, 159 have so far recovered from the virus.

The state is eagerly waiting for Uhuru Kenyatta to make his state address on 6th July 2020.

The decision to relax containment measures has led to the open conflict of preference from The Interior ministry, and the Health Ministry.

On his side, Dr. Fred Matiangi, the CS Interior Ministry argued that the Kenyans needed to return to their livelihoods, as they risk abject poverty.

On the other hand, Health Ministry CS, Mutahi Kagwe feared the government health system would risk collapse, as the state is not adequately prepared to handle mass coronavirus situation.

Kenya has been under state sanctioned containment measures for almost 4 months.

The harshest of the measures are; the closure of hotspot areas from other counties, the 9pm to 5am lockdown, and the closure of Kenyan borders.

The measures triggered massive job cuts, rise in costs of commodities and services, and in some instances almost zero income on private businesses.
