Kenyan Climate Champion Honored with Mural in Estonia

Kenyan environmentalist and climate activist Elizabeth Wathuti has received a remarkable tribute in Narva City, Estonia, where a vibrant mural inspired by her journey was unveiled this week.

Painted by Ukrainian artist Viktoria Berezina, the artwork celebrates Wathuti’s evolution from a young girl planting trees in Kenya to becoming a leading voice for climate justice across Africa.

The mural, commissioned as part of a European public art initiative, symbolises global solidarity in the fight against climate change. It captures Wathuti’s passion for nature and her unyielding dedication to community-led environmental action.

Founder of the Green Generation Initiative, Wathuti has spearheaded the planting of over 30,000 tree seedlings across Kenya and has championed climate education among youth.

Her grassroots impact has earned her global recognition, including the Time100 Impact Award (2023), the Diana Award, and the National Heroes Award conferred by President William Ruto.

Wathuti rose to international prominence with her stirring speech at COP26 in Glasgow, where she urged world leaders to take urgent climate action, drawing praise from figures like U.S. President Joe Biden.

She has also played key roles in campaigns such as “Save Karura Forest” and served as the youngest commissioner on Kenya’s Nairobi Rivers Commission.

She was recently appointed Commissioner on the Global Commission on the Economics of Water.
