Written By Lisa Murimi

Kenyan educators have a unique opportunity to expand their professional and cultural horizons through the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program.

The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has announced that the deadline for applications is only 11 days away, urging eligible candidates to seize this rare chance.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the Fulbright FLTA Program allows Kenyan educators to spend an academic year in the United States, teaching Swahili and sharing Kenyan culture.

The program, scheduled for the 2025-2026 academic year, is open to educators from five African nations, including Kenya.

This initiative aims to foster cross-cultural understanding by placing language teaching assistants in U.S. higher education institutions.

Participants will engage in teaching, leading conversation groups, and participating in community events, enriching both American students’ education and their own professional development.

To be eligible, applicants must be Kenyan citizens with a strong academic background, fluency in English, and a sincere interest in cultural exchange.

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens, holding the necessary travel documents, and must apply through the binational Fulbright Commission or the US Embassy in Kenya. To be eligible, candidates must:

● Hold an undergraduate degree with a strong academic record; a Master’s degree is advantageous.

● Be an early career teacher or training to become one, with prior teaching experience preferred.

● Demonstrate fluency in English with recent test scores of no less than 550 (Paper Based TOEFL), 79-80 (Internet Based TOEFL – IBT), or 6.0 (IELTS).

● Show a sincere interest in teaching their native language and culture to US students.

● Be adaptable, flexible, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Applications must be submitted by September 10 through the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy.

This program offers invaluable international exposure, making it a competitive and highly sought-after opportunity.
