Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a journalist with Mediamax, has revealed that her life is in danger following a shooting incident during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations led by Gen Zs across Kenya.
Wanjeri, who was shot three times while covering the protests in Nakuru, disclosed that she has received threatening calls from individuals suspected to be involved in the shooting, urging her to withdraw the case currently under investigation.
Wanjeri expressed her fear of leaving her home due to the intimidating calls from an unidentified male caller who appeared to know personal details about her and her family.
“It is true that there might be someone targeting me. How can I get the courage to come out of my house as a woman when someone you don’t know calls you and even worse, they know your family?” she said.
Despite contemplating dropping the case out of fear, Wanjeri has decided to pursue justice, thanks to the support from her colleagues in Nakuru.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo condemned the intimidation, calling for thorough investigations into the incident.
Wanjeri was shot while covering protests in Nakuru’s Central Business District, an incident that has drawn widespread condemnation from civil groups and the media fraternity.
The Media Owners Association has urged the government to ensure journalists can work without fear of reprisals.
