Kenyan Man Accuses St. Teresa Hospital of Negligence in Wife’s C-Section Death

A Nairobi businessman, Joseph Owen Wanyonyi, has accused St. Teresa Kikuyu Hospital of medical negligence following the death of his wife, Philis Wanyonyi, who passed away during a cesarean section on September 12, 2025.

According to Wanyonyi, his wife suffered excessive bleeding during the procedure despite assurances from the hospital that adequate blood supplies were available.

He claims the hospital failed to respond swiftly and effectively to the emergency, ultimately leading to her death.

In a series of emotional posts on X, Wanyonyi described how his wife was later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where staff reportedly criticized the handling of her case at St. Teresa.

His online appeals have since sparked widespread public outrage, with hashtags such as #JusticeForPhilis trending and calls for a formal investigation into the facility’s practices.

St. Teresa Kikuyu Hospital, led by CEO Dr. Moses Mwaura, has not yet issued a public statement on the allegations. However, this is not the first time the hospital has faced scrutiny.

In 2019, it temporarily lost its operating license after a similar fatal cesarean complication, according to records from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.

The incident has reignited debate about persistent gaps in Kenya’s maternal healthcare system, where inadequate resources, delays, and alleged negligence continue to put mothers’ lives at risk.
