Kenyan Singer Marya Recovering at Home After Stroke: Avril Shares Emotional Update

Beloved Kenyan songstress Marya, best known for her chart-topping 2010 hit Chokoza featuring Avril, is on the long road to recovery after suffering a stroke caused by a blood clot that temporarily cut off oxygen to her brain. The trailblazing artist was recently discharged from hospital and is now recuperating at home under close care.

Fellow singer and longtime friend Avril took to Instagram with an emotional update, sharing a message from Marya’s family. “Physiotherapy is ongoing twice a day, and although the left side of her body is still unresponsive, we remain hopeful and encouraged by her strength,” the statement read. The family also extended heartfelt thanks for the overwhelming love, prayers, and support received since the news broke.

Marya herself shared a personal update on social media, posting touching photos with her two children. One image showed her reclining on a couch, while another captured a tender moment with her youngest child in her arms and her eldest standing close. In her message, the singer opened up about the emotional toll her condition has taken on her family. “My oldest son is in shock,” she wrote, revealing the quiet struggles accompanying her physical healing.

Avril’s post quickly gained traction online, transforming from a health update into a passionate call for continued support from fans, friends, and the wider music community. “Marya and her family still need us,” Avril pleaded. “Please continue to support and reach out to her personally as you’re able. Every call, message, prayer, or visit goes a long way.”

She also highlighted the urgent need for medical supplies and home-based care equipment to aid in Marya’s rehabilitation, including a hospital bed, wheelchair, ripple mattress, and other essentials.

As news of Marya’s condition continues to spread, waves of solidarity have poured in from fellow artists, industry peers, and longtime fans. Many credit Marya, real name Mary Maina, as one of the women who helped shape Kenya’s urban music scene during her time with the iconic Ogopa Deejays label, with hits like Hey Baby and Sishiki Simu.

While her road to recovery remains challenging, the outpouring of love and support paints a picture of an industry and fan base rallying around one of its own.
